I saw a post by someone where they complained that they put together a big gaming night on a university campus, with a bar setup and everything. No one showed up. The responses to his post chided him for marketing it instead of "organizing" it, whatever that means. Multiple comments told him he should have used word of mouth IRL instead of using fliers. One person invites their friends, and one of them invites their friends, and so on. All to show up to something none of them have been to before.
Except that doesn't happen anymore. That's not how the world works anymore. We all want to be cool and say we are a part of an endless grid of highly connected people who are all socially proactive. But that doesn't exist in 2026. No one should feel bad that they aren't a part of that because it doesn't exist. Like the article pointed out, everyone is at home. And if they do get out, social circles are a lot tighter and isolated.
My response to this guy was that he should scale back. Do the fliers, invite just your friends. Don't expect it to chain realistically. Things that take off take off slower than ever if at all. So if you are going to make a thing exist, you have to be in it for the long haul and not set up a one time event. And you have to be absurdly efficient with your effort.
