I feel like we could set clocks to ebola outbreaks in Congo. And maybe we can for good reason. Disease follows a differencial equation. There is a broad class of them (most) that have a state that orbits around what's called a strange attractor. It never goes to zero.
That's why I though the whole "we need to lock up to eliminate covid" thing was funny. There is only one of two things you are doing (or both). You are slowing it's initial burn through the population, thus prolonging it, or increasing or decreasing our distance from the attractor. And neither are a purely good thing. Being near or far from that attractor just decides if you want a continually present disease or intermittent flare ups.
Either way you aren't eliminating anything or making anything happen faster or getting things back to normal by acting like a crazy person.

It's interesting that this seems to be a rarer strain, not one which killed thousands previously, so less studied and "no licensed vaccine" as The Guardian says.
