This is just one item on a long list of problems we have in the West.

There are a lot of forces applied to create the individuals and culture (with/without ethics, morals, taboos, etc.) that we live in.

Ultimately it depends on what kind of person you are, how you behave, and what you think and believe - and if society permits freedoms, including the freedom to make mistakes.

There is no threat to be banished from society anymore. In fact, you can be a drag on society now and still be supported by it. There are too many people to live by the old rules. Eventually, the people who are predisposed to follow norms will stop caring. Then we will put ourselves back into serfdom. I feel like we're voting ourselves into that now.

I vote 'disagree' because:

  1. Hookups are great if the couple is nice and responsible

  2. Hookups are as old as the human species

  3. Anyone around in the 60s or 70s will know that hookups were greatly enjoyed at that time and only criticised mainly after 1981, when there were concerns about HIV and AIDs

Thank Fauci.

It’s harmful to the soul.

Strongly agree. Particularly for females. Goes against the vast majority of female instincts.

It also gives males a sense of "put out or I'll just move on to someone who will." Gives males zero incentive to put any effort into a relationship.

The lack of real relationships and co parenting will always be a negative on society.

That being said I'm hardly naive. Hook ups are a thing, have been since the dawn of time. People are people. It's making an accepting culture of it a problem. We need a little shame in this world.

Something else

Hypergamy is women doing what they want with no control . That's good and bad. Harmful to society? What is society. men? No men are just part of society. It increases competition for the precious natural resource that is women. Competition is part of evolution.

Here's how an incel is formed but uses intelligence to find an alternative.

In horned beetles Onthophagus acuminatus, males that receive high levels of nutrition during development surpass a size threshold above which they develop large horns. Males who do not pass the threshold develop either small or nonexistent horns. These varying phenotypes lead individual males to adopt different mating strategies. Males that develop long horns practice mate guarding, protecting the entrance to the tunnel in which a female is resting or feeding. These males fight any male that attempts to enter. This is common in populations where females are dispersed and have synchronized periods of fertility, and in those where females live in clusters that can be guarded to maintain access to more than one female. Smaller males with small or no horns have little chance of beating larger males, and thus adopt an alternative sneaking strategy, digging a new tunnel to intercept the female's tunnel without being noticed by the guarding male. Both of these strategies are reproductively effective for the males practicing them, resulting in a dimorphic male population.[4]

But neither is celebate. You even said both reproductive strategies are viable.

[-]newJiminy2(+1|0)

Well in this example the incel Beatle sneaks into a woman's home and rapes her. You can see how that happens with other animals and humans.

Did he? Is the female beetle avoiding him? From your text the only creature's will that was violated is the larger male's.

Are beetles capable of consent? Maybe it's an open question if consent is purely a human concept used for human inter-relation. Consent is a non-concept for most of the animal kingdom, even including most mammals. So it certainly is a non-concept among beetles. She got offspring. Even offspring from a mate that has a viable reproduction strategy. Humans don't like it. But that's because we're human where consent does exist and is important. Not even all humans are said to have a capacity for consent. Not as a matter of meeting the standard of informed consent, but consent broadly. There is no way a beetle can give consent or non-consent.

[-]newJiminy2(+1|0)

lol that female Beetle doesn't want some guy with a little horn or worse, no horn at all! But yeah if they can't think about consent it's not quite the same as with humans. Insects are pretty smart but I don't know how smart.

Hookup culture in humans, where the alpha men get the women. Ask this question to that alpha male and he'll say it's great. All the good genes get continued in society.

With those beetles they use intelligence to tunnel around, they're smart enough to do that. So then intelligence genes continue on the beetles. So hookup culture is bad in humans if it keeps intelligent incel genes from spreading. That's why I wanted to compare it to the beetle example. And notice low nutrition during development is what causes this inceldom. A solution is there.

males that receive high levels of nutrition during development

The small horn beetles may simply be a symptom of circumstance, not poor genes.
If anything, the big horn is an evolutionary symbol of a priority for nutrition - plus the backup persistence loophole to propagate regardless.

Alpha men may get some of the best "action", but they may or may not prosper like anyone, despite their advantages. And women may not get the full attention they want from the alpha men - so inevitably they'll resort to less-than-alphas. It's never all or nothing for the general public - though Involuntarily Celibate folks have much bigger issues.
